Reasonable fuel consumption - very good on long runs - and an excellent car to drive.

This is an all-new model, but you’d need a keen eye to tell. It’s very 3 Series-ish, and that’s a good thing because elsewhere in the range BMW has gone mad, fitting radiator grilles the size of long-stay airport car parks. At present there are six engines on offer. Diesels and hybrids and so on. And now there is an M3 Touring.

BMW 5 Series M550i 2017 first drive But as successive road tests have shown, the M5 has grown more and more hardcore in demeanour and behaviour in recent years, belying its near 5.0m length.
It even came with a full 5 year servicing package. It has proved to be a joy to own. Insurance is not high, and its road tax is lower than my previous 325d Touring (2006). It is used mainly on long journeys, sometimes fully loaded. The performance is fantastic, whilst the genuine economy is just under 43 mpg (measured - fuel book kept).
