This is a sandbox game, you do what you want to do, conquer, become a vassal, become a king, an emperor, do what you want. At beginning, I would raid bandits and their hide outs. Then join a faction as mercenary, after that as vassal, get some money and influence.

But, none of that seems to be the case in Bannerlord. That's somewhat upsetting - I can't "pass down" refused Rescued Units or Prisoners to my fellow Lords in an Army or after a Battle. Also - Loot mechanics. We need to know them or at least have an idea of how they work. In Warband, all unit formations got a share of Loot before the player did.
They're prisoners of your Army Captains! It's like how when you enter a town/castle your troops get counted towards the garrison troops. Try leaving the castle and talking to your Army Captains>> if "talk to prisoners" is an option you can open the barter menu and buy the prisoner from them. Just click the send troops option when you are farming bandits. The send troops option gives all of your bois a ton of xp and your troops only get wounded against bandits unless they are tier one. That's how I farm troop xp and it is suuuuuuper fast. 2. iPhorgot. Looters are the first-tier infantry for Bandits. Equipment Looters can spawn with in battle. Being Bandits, almost all of their armor is torn, tattered, worn, battered, or frayed, and nearly all of their weapons are rusty, splintered, and bent. This means their equipment is in poor condition, and thus has somewhat lower than average stats. I have a few named prisoners and was wondering if I could recruit them if they stay in my party long enough. There is a recruit button right next to the Execute Prisoner button, but when I hover over it, it says that I can’t recruit Prisoner Heros as companions.DKPR.
